Which products are suitable for a Dislocated Shoulder?
When a dislocated shoulder occurs, there is often associated soft tissue damage to the surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments or cartilage. As with all soft tissue injuries, these should be rested, iced and compressed to help them heal. The Coldone shoulder wrap is an excellent tool to use in the treatment of soft tissue injuries. The wrap is placed in the freezer until required when it can then be applied to the shoulder for the desired period (the current recommendation is 15 minutes at a time, every 3-4 hours). The whole shoulder is covered and cooled by the wrap, which stays in place, allowing you to move around whilst using it, making these wraps clean, quick and easy to use.
To help protect your shoulder as you begin the rehabilitation process, you may find a shoulder support useful. The McDavid 462 is the most protective of our supports. It allows a good range of motion at the joint, allowing you to undertake rehabilitation exercises and daily activities, whilst offering the additional protection and peace of mind you may require.
In the early stages of rehabilitation, resistance bands are excellent products to use. They are stretchy lengths of latex which can be used to resist shoulder movements and strengthen the muscles involved. These kind of exercises can begin as soon as they are pain free. Resistance bands come in varying strengths from light to extra heavy and are sold by the meter or roll.
As your rehabilitation progresses and you move on to using weights and performing body weight exercises such as push-ups and dips, consider adding to this with a medicine ball. These are excellent pieces of kit for all types of training and upper body rehabilitation. Medicine balls come in varying weights, between 1 and 5 Kg. They can be used to throw and catch, improving the dynamic strength of the shoulder, which is vital for those involved in throwing and racket sports. |
