What is Chondromalacia Patellae

Chondromalacia patellae (CMP) is damage to the articular cartilage which lines the back of the knee cap. The cause of this damage may be from an acute injury such as an impact to the front of the knee. More commonly, CMP may be the result of a chronic overuse injury, caused by maltracking of the knee cap. The mal-tracking of the knee cap is known as Patellofemoral pain and chondromalacia patellae is the resulting damage that often occurs.

Symptoms of CMP:

  • Pain at the front of the knee.
  • A grinding or clicking feeling when straightening the knee (known as crepitus).
  • Pressing down on the knee cap when the knee is straight may be painful.
  • Minor swelling may be present.

Treatment of Chondromalacia Patellae

  • Determine the cause of the injury - if it is patella mal-tracking this should be treated also.
  • A doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication to ease pain and inflammation.
  • Taping may reduce the excess movement at the knee cap.
  • A knee support may help reduce excess patella movement.
  • A rehabilitation programme may be advised to correct muscle imbalances.

Useful Products:

  • Cold Therapy - helps to ease pain and reduce swelling
  • Knee Supports - help to support and protect the knee, and retains therapeutic body heat.
