Infrapatella Bursitis

 Overview

What is Infrapatella Bursitis?

A bursa is a small sack of fluid which is designed to reduce friction between soft tissues and underlying bone. The Infrapatella bursa is situated between the patella tendon (beneath the kneecap) and the Tibia (shin bone) underneath. Bursitis occurs when the bura becomes inflamed. This may be use to repetitive friction or a direct impact. This injury sometimes occurs in conjunction with jumper's knee.

Symptoms of Infrapatella Bursitis

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain at the front of the knee
  • Tenderness in the area below the knee cap
  • Symptoms are similar to jumper's knee so it can be difficult to tell between them.

Treatment

  • Rest from aggravating activities.
  • Application of cold therapy to ease pain and inflammation.
  • You may be prescribed anti-inflammatory medication.
  • If the buritis persists then it may be aspirated to drain excess fluid.
  • A corticosteriod injection may be administered.
  • If all of the above fails, then a surgical procedure to remove the bursa completely may be undertaken.

Recommended Products:

  • Cold therapy - ice packs and wraps can be used to ease pain and reduce swelling.
  • Knee supports - may be useful to provide support, heat retention and compression to the knee joint.
