PCL Assessment and Diagnosis

Some of the most widely used tests for PCL injury are explained below for information purposes. Always seek professional advice.

Hyperextension

Over straightening or hyperextending the knee may cause pain in PCL injuries. More so in partial tears.

Posterior drawer test

The posterior drawer test involves applying a backwards force to the Tibia (shin bone) whilst the knee is bent. A positive result is recorded if the Tibia moves back further than on the other leg.

Posterior sag test

The lower leg is raised to a horizontal position, with the knee bent. The therapist looks to see if the Tibia drops down, forming a dent at the front of the upper shin. Always compare to the other knee.
