Cold Therapy
Cold therapy products can be used to help ease pain and swelling which may occur in patellofemoral pain syndrome. A simple cold pack is efficient, or a cold therapy wrap such as the ColdOne Knee Wrap may also be used to provide cooling and compression together.
Knee Supports
A knee support can be helpful in this condition. It is important to get one which has a hole at the front for the patella, which is surrounding by padding to help stabilise it and prevent excess movement. There are a wide range available which have this feature and come in varying amounts of support for the knee joint itself.
If there have been no previous injuries and the knee joint itself is stable then a simple support such as the LP708 may be suitable. If more support is required due to previous or associated injuries, then a stabilised support such as the McDavid 421 may be used.
There are a few products which are designed specifically for Patella tracking problems. These tend to have a thicker, J shaped padded area running down the outside of the kneecap and also a strap which pulls the knee cap inwards. Examples include the Pro-Tec J-Lat Knee Support and the Donjoy Lateral J Knee Brace and Tru-Pull range.
Tape
The knee cap can also be taped to prevent excess movement. Generally a sports injury professional should do this, although they may be able to show you how to apply the tape yourself.
Zinc oxide tape is used in a 2.5cm width to pull the knee cap medially (inwards). Patella taping kits are available for taping the patella, which also include dressing retention tape to help the tape stay in place.
