Synovial Plica / Patella Plica

 Synovial Plica | Products

What is a Synovial Plica?

Every large joint in the body contains synovial fluid which acts to lubicate the joint. This is contained within the synovial sheath. A plica is a fold within this sheath, found along the inside border of the knee cap. If the plica becomes inflamed it may result in pain at the knee.

Symptoms of a Synovial Plica

  • Variable sharp pain at the front or inner part of the knee joint.
  • Sharp pain on squatting is a common complaint.
  • The plica can sometimes be felt as a thickened band underneath the inner side of the patella.

Treatment

  • A plica should only be considered to be the main cause of pain when patellofemoral pain has been ruled out.
  • If conservative treatment for patellofemoral pain fails, then keyhole surgery may be performed to remove the plica.

Recommended Products:

  • Cold therapy - ice packs and wraps can be used to ease pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Knee supports - providing mild support and heat retention to the joint may help to ease symptoms.

Please see the Virtual Sports Injury Clinic for more information on how to treat a Synovial Plica and other causes of knee pain.
