Anterior impingement of the ankle

Footballers' ankle normally follows an injury where the ankle has been bent or over stretched. It manifests as a bony growth at the front of the ankle where the joint capsule attaches. Inflammation of the joint capsule and tendons is caused by the bony deposits .

  • There will be pain and tenderness when pressing in with the fingers over the front of the ankle joint.
  • Bending your foot up or down causes pain.
  • When kicking a ball you get a band of pain across the front of the ankle joint.
  • Bony lump at the front of the ankle.

  • Surgery may be required if the bony growth is large enough, this will mean that there is very little the athlete can do on their own.
  • Embark on a rehabilitation programme recommended by a sports injury professional.
