What is Shin Splints?

Shin splints does not refer to a particular injury but is more a general name for pain at the front of the lower leg. The most common cause is inflammation of the periostium or sheath surrounding the tibia bone.

Shin Splints Symptoms

  • Pain over the inside of the lower shin.
  • Redness or swelling may be present on the inside of the lower leg.
  • Lumps and bumps over the bone where the injury has tried to heal in the past.
  • Pain or discomfort when the toes are bent downwards.

Shin Splints Treatment

  • Rest, especially from high impact activities or running.
  • Cold therapy early on will help reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Apply a shin splints taping technique to the which can take some of the strain off and support the area.
  • Wear shock absorbing insoles in shoes.
  • Continue with you fitness training but avoid impact or running on the toes.
  • Ensure running shoes are in good condition.
  • A doctor may prescribe NSAIDs anti-inflammatory medication e.g. ibuprofen (not for asthmatics!!).
  • Seek professional advice concerning your running style for over pronation and other biomechanical factors.
