Which products are suitable for Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is pain and inflammation of the fascia under the heel and sole of the foot. A number of treatments that you can do at home may help to ease your symptoms.

The Coldone plantar fascia wrap is great for reducing the pain and inflammation associated with this condition. The whole wrap is placed in the freezer until required, when it is then wrapped around the foot. It will then stay put for the desired amount of time. The whole coldone range are excellent for, quick, clean and easy cold therapy.

Plantar fasciitis results in the tightening of the plantar fascia on the sole of the foot, overnight. This causes the symptoms to be worst first thing in the morning. The calf muscles also tend to tighten up. The Plantar fascia night splint can be worn at night to prevent the fascia and calf muscles tightening up. The splint allows you to gradually increase the stretch at the ankle as your flexibility improves.

Abnormal foot biomechanics are often a contributory factor in the development of plantar fasciitis. If you have a flat foot, or you overpronate when walking (meaning your foot rolls inwards), this places additional stress on the fascia under the foot. This problem can be corrected using arch support insoles. Similarly, if you have a very high, rigid arch, or you oversupinate (meaning the foot rolls outwards) when you walk, then the foot is not very good at shock absorption, which causes extra stress to pass through the fascia. In this case, shock absorbing insoles can help.

Alternatively, if you have normal foot biomechanics, a heel pad may be the way to go. These are cushioning underneath the heel and some models have a 'soft spot' which will reduce the pressure on the most painful area.

Stretching the calf muscles on a regular basis can make a big difference to this condition. In order to improve flexibility stretches should be carried out 3-5 times a day. To help you do this, a slant board is an excellent tool. These can be adjusted to maintain a stretch as your flexibility improves.

A method often used by sports injury professionals to treat plantar fasciitis is applying zinc oxide tape to take the strain off the fascia. You can find an example of this taping technique here.
