What is the Subscapularis Muscle?

The subscapularis muscle runs from the underside of the shoulder blade, and runs to the front of the humerus in the upper arm. It is one of the four muscles which makes up the Rotator Cuff. As it is a very powerful muscle used to rotate the arm inwards, it is usually damaged by throwers. A partial rupture in this muscle is more common than a full rupture.

Symptoms of an Inflamed Subscapularis Tendon

  • Pain when moving the shoulder especially when the arm is raised above the shoulder
  • Pain when you rotate the arm inwards against resistance
  • Pain when you press in where the tendon inserts

Please see the Virtual Sports Injury Clinic for more information on how to treat Subscapularis tendon inflammation and other shoulder injuries.
