What is the Supraspinatus Tendon?

The Supraspinatus Muscle runs along the top of the shoulder blade (scapula), and inserts via the tendon at the top of the upper arm bone (humerus). This muscle is used to lift the arm sideways and is important in throwing sports as it is this muscle which holds the arm in the socket as you throw. It is one of the 4 rotator cuff muscles. this muscle can be damaged by excessive throwing (or throwing excessively hard), or landing on an outstretched arm.

Over the tendon is a bursa, which is a small sac of fluid that protects it. This bursa can become trapped and inflamed, which is known as bursitis. This injury is more common among those who have suffered a rupture of the supraspinatus tendon
