What is the Pectoralis Major Muscle?

The Pectoralis Major Muscle is a large powerful muscle at the front of the chest. It is used to rotate the arm inwards, pull a horizontal arms across the body, pull the arm from above the head down and pull the arm from the side upwards. The tendon where it inserts into the humerus (upper arm bone) can become inflamed. This injury is common among racquet sport players, rowers, and weight trainers as well as those who are sports throwers.

Symptoms

  • Pain at the front of the arm where the muscle inserts
  • Pain when bringing the arm across the chest against resistance
  • Pain when rotating the arm inwards against resistance
