What is the Biceps Muscle?

The Biceps muscle splits into 2 tendons at the top, one long and one short. The long tendon runs over the humerus bone (upper arm bone) and attaches at the top of the scapula (shoulder blade). This tendon is ruptured more commonly in older athletes than younger athletes.

Symptoms

  • A sudden sharp pain at the front of the upper arm
  • Pain and swelling over the front of the shoulder joint
  • You will be unable to contract the biceps muscle against resistance because it will be too painful
  • Pain on lifting your arm against resistance

Please see the Virtual Sports Injury Clinic for more information on how to treat a Rupture of Biceps Long Head and other shoulder injuries.
