Thigh Pain


Most Common Thigh Injuries

Dead leg (Contusion)
Caused by a direct blow to the thigh.

Groin strain
Pain on the inside of the groin which can range from a mild inconvenience to a severe tear leaving the athlete unable to walk.

Hamstring strain
Pain at the back of the thigh. A common injury among sprinters, footballers and other explosive sports.

Quad strain (front thigh strain)
Tear in the muscle at the front of the thigh. Usually a sudden onset pain similar to that of a hamstring strain.


Less Common Thigh Pain

Adductor inflammation
There will be pain in the groin at the top of the adductor muscles. This may radiate down the leg. Specific points on the bone in the groin may be painful. Pressing the legs together against resistance may be painful. Have difficulty in running especially sprinting.

Gilmore's groin
Overuse, wear and tear injury to the groin. There will be an increase in pain when twisting, sprinting, running and turning. Surgery is usually indicated.

Hernia
A rupture of bulge in the abdominal wall. Symptoms include pain in the groin when you exercise or even cough and sneeze.

Inflammation of the rectus femoris tendon
Pain at a point in the front of the hip (at the top of the rectus femoris thigh muscle.

Ostitis pubis
Groin pain when running, doing sit-ups and squatting. Groin pain may develop gradually and be mistaken for a muscle strain. In bad cases you may walk with a waddling gait.

Perthes disease
Hip pain in children. The child complains of tiredness and pain in the groin and sometimes in the knee. Pain can be felt in the knee only even though the disease only effects the hip.
